Four Generations

Wendy Red Star is a critically acclaimed Apsáalooke (Crow) multidisciplinary artist who works in photography, sculpture, video, fiber arts, and performance. Her work focuses on her indigenous identity and cultural heritage. As an avid researcher of archives, Red Star studies indigenous cultural objects and historical narratives, incorporating what she learns into her work. Her work often includes images of herself or family members. “Four Generations” is part of a trio of prints derived from Red Star’s archival research of her own genealogy. All three feature photographs of family members replicated and organized against a backdrop of star quilt patterns that are cherished by her Crow community. This print incorporates images of Red Star’s grandmother, Amy Bright Wings Red Star; her father, Wallace Red Star; herself; and her daughter, Beatrice Red Star Fletcher.
