Geoffrey Mukasa

Between 1978 and 1980, Geoffrey Mukasa studied fine art abroad at the University of Lucknow’s College of Arts and Crafts in India under the tutelage of M.F. Husain (also represented in the Chazen collection). In 1981, he returned to Uganda, where he established a career as a professional artist while working as a graphic designer. In 1990 he had his first major exhibition, a two-person show with artist Fabian Mpagi. This mixed media collage painting likely dates to early the following decade and was purchased by the donor in Nigeria. It is typical of the artist’s oeuvre in that Mukasa’s paintings are figurative, often brightly colored. He is considered one of the leading Ugandan artists of the twentieth century.
