Khaled Ben Slimane

Khaled Ben Slimane works across media, including ceramics and works on paper, but a calligraphic element is always present in his work. Ben Slimane graduated from the Eschola Massana in Barcelona in 1977 and l’Institut Technologique d’Art, d’Architecture et d’Urbanisme in Tunis in 1982. While in Spain he was influenced by the work of Joan Miró and Antoni Tàpies, aspects of whose work appear in this ceramic—especially in the colorful doodle-like markings in one section. Since childhood Slimane has been interested in calligraphy and the graphic quality of Arabic script, signatures in particular. He decorates his ceramics with Arabic expressions, sayings, and words. This iconography is paired with ceramic and glazing techniques he learned in Japan during an eight-month residency at the Idemitsu Museum.
