Henry Billings

Henry Billings was an American modernist painter, illustrator, and muralist influenced by surrealism and machine aesthetics. Billings studied at the Art Students League and was a member of the Woodstock Art Colony. This portrait displays the crisp, clean lines and bright colors that appear in many of his works. The architectural elements in the background create an uncentered framing device that grounds the painting in modernism. John “Jock” Saltonstall, Jr. came from a prominent Boston Brahmin family. He became a civil rights lawyer and politician in the Democratic Party.
