Daniel Rodríguez

This small olla was made by Daniel Rodríguez, a potter from Mata Ortiz, a small village located in Chihuahua, Mexico. Mata Ortiz pottery is a revival of traditional pottery from Casas Grandes and Paquimé, two cities that thrived before the 1600s. Juan Quezada is widely credited with first producing modern pottery in the 1970s based on pottery sherds from the region. Other local artists followed suit and the town is now widely known for their pottery. Mata Ortiz artists generally use a “single-coil” method of construction, polish their pieces with stones, seeds, and bones, and hand paint the ceramics using handmade brushes and mineral-based pigments.
