Maximilian Kurzweil

Maximilian “Max” Kurzweil was an Austrian painter and printmaker. He studied in Vienna at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste from 1886-1888 and under the painter Leopold Carl Müller from 1890-91 before additional training in Paris at the Académie Julian. In 1897, he was one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession movement and contributed many woodcuts to their official journal “Ver Sacrum” (1898-1903). The Vienna Secessionists resisted the academic move toward conservative historicism in art and upheld a more progressive Art Nouveau style. This painting depicts a model that Kurzweil seems to have painted a number of times during the first decade of the 1900s. Here, she wears a colorful garment that features patterning reminiscent of peacock feathers.
