Montenegro II, from the Brazilian series

Montenegro II, from the Brazilian series

Frank Stella

Over the course of his career as an abstract painter and printmaker, Frank Stella has changed styles dramatically and innovatively, sometimes much to the chagrin of critics. One of these fundamental shifts in his practice occurred in the mid-1970s, following a decade of work that could be described as linear and minimalist. In the middle of the 1970s, Stella for the first time produced a series of large, elaborate metal constructions, influenced aesthetically by the sharp angles and clustered planes of Russian Constructivism: the “Brazilian” pictures, which he considered paintings. Montenegro II is from this series, marking this transformative moment. Each work in the “Brazilian” series is named after a location in or around Rio de Janeiro. The series emerged from drawings and collage reliefs that Stella made between 1971 and 1974.
