William Langson Lathrop

After struggling for years as an artist, William Lathrop found success as a watercolorist when he won the top award at the 1896 annual exhibition of the American Watercolor Society. In 1899, he moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania and helped establish the New Hope art colony, home of the Pennsylvania Impressionists. This watercolor is representative of Lathrop’s tonalist style and affinity for creating evocative landscapes in muted shades.
