Bruce King

Bruce King was a talented artist—not only in the visual arts, but as a published playwright, composer, and musician as well. King was a member of the Turtle Clan of the Haudenosaunee-Oneida Nation and was a Vietnam Veteran. He attended Northwestern University and the Institute of American Indian Arts. His painting style broke conventions by combining elements of abstraction and figuration. King typically built up his background in an abstract manner through dripping, brushing, and splattering paint. From this, he sought out forms from which he built up his subjects. Horses and warriors on horseback were frequent themes. In 2015 (in a video interview by the Waxlander Gallery), King said “I always try to find the man on the horse, try to bring it out, as opposed to illustrating it in.”
