George Washington Maher

George Washington Maher was an architect out of Chicago who took the unified design principles of fellow Prairie School designers a step further. He was a proponent of the “motif-rhythm” theory, meaning that he repeated motifs throughout each building he designed on the exterior, interior, and in its furnishings. Poppies, a quintessential prairie flower, was one motif that he used frequently. This leaded stained-glass window is an example of how regional flora inspired Prairie School design.
