Margaret Taylor Burroughs

Margaret Taylor Burroughs was an African American artist, educator, author, and art advocate. Following high school, Burroughs trained to be a teacher and went on to earn BA and MA degrees in Art Education at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1941, at the age of 23, Burroughs helped establish the Chicago South Side Community Art Center. Burroughs and her husband founded the Ebony Museum of Negro History and Art in the living room of their Chicago home in 1961. As an artist, Burroughs worked in a variety of mediums, but she was above all a printmaker and best known for linoleum cuts like “On the Beach,” which explore aspects of African American culture and everyday life.
