Rhoda Holmes Nicholls

Born in Coventry, England, Rhoda Holmes Nicholls (née Rhoda Holmes) studied at the Bloomsbury School of Art (now the Royal College of Art) in London, before continuing her training for three years in Italy, including Venice. Recognized internationally for her oil paintings and watercolors, Nicholls also worked as an illustrator. Nicholls served as vice-president of the New York Watercolor Club and taught watercolor at the Shinnecock Summer School of Art, operated by William Merritt Chase. Titled and dated “1883” in an inscription by the artist, “Venice” dates to around the time of Nicholls’s return to the city and features anchored sailboats and mooring stakes reflected in calm water.
