William Merritt Chase

This portrait likely represents one of William Merritt Chase’s students at the Chase School of Art or the New York School of Art. The portrait is in Chase’s signature style, though it is a relatively simple composition, suggesting that it may have been executed as a classroom demonstration and its sitter is unknown. John Douglas Connah purchased the Chase School of Art in 1896, though Chase continued to teach at the renamed New York School of Art until 1907. This portrait descended directly in the Connah family.
