Konrad Cramer

Konrad Cramer was a painter and photographer. Born in Germany, Cramer trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. In 1911 Cramer immigrated to the United States and settled in Woodstock, NY, bringing with him an interest in modernist styles, namely Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, and Cubism. Cramer experimented extensively with techniques, media, and materials. “Nude with N” represents a body of work in which Cramer integrated painting and photography. The work comprises an abstract female nude, painted with fluid, gestural brushstrokes on a sheet of transparent plastic. Cramer left the figure’s torso unpainted and placed one his photographs of a sculpture bust by his longtime friend, Elie Nadelman, behind the plastic window.
