Giovanni Battista Piranesi

Giovanni Battista Piranesi was a prominent eighteenth-century Italian engraver and draughtsman who mainly depicted architecture. He is well known for his printed views of Rome, including ancient ruins and Renaissance and Baroque architecture. This large etching and engraving features the exterior of the Palazzo Mancini, which the country of France acquired and used to house the French Academy in Rome from 1737 to 1793. Engraved letters on the façade mark the locations of rooms within the academy, which are described in a corresponding key in the lower margin.
