Carl G. Hill

The subject of the portrait is currently unidentified. However, the straightforward representation, direct gaze, sensitively rendered facial details, and the apparent age of the subject make it possible that it is a self-portrait of the artist. The portrait was also acquired along with a cache of sketches and lithograph proofs, suggesting that the watercolor was from the artist’s personal collection. A photograph of the artist has not yet been found.
