Guangzhou (Canton) was the only Chinese port open to Western trade between 1757 and 1840. This painting depicts the warehouses overseen by various Western countries in Guangzhou. These were called ‘hongs,’ a term derived from the Cantonese pronunciation of the Chinese word for business or company (‘hang’). This painting shows the harbor in its early stages, at the end of the eighteenth century.
