In the 1550s, China allowed the Portuguese to build a settlement on an island called Macau (Macao) off the coast of China. Most Western ships stopped at Macau, where any women and children departed and remained for the season, as they were not permitted to enter China proper. Macau was marked by a circular bay, the Praya Grande, depicted in this painting, as well as its many churches. The Convent of San Francisco is seen at the end of the point on the right, with Guia Hill rising above.
