Along with views of the ports and portraits, images of ships were another popular subject for Chinese Export Painting, especially after 1815. This painting depicts an American clipper ship. Ships were often depicted with a decorative landscape behind, such as Lintin Island, Whampoa, or as in this example, Hong Kong.
