Gaspard Dughet

Classical Landscape with Figures by a Lake by the French painter Gaspard Dughet shows an ideal landscape in which harmony and order prevail. Dughet, who lived in Rome, spent much time painting in the countryside. He was a keen observer of nature, such as the effects of the wind and changing light on trees and water. In spite of his tendencies toward naturalism, he worked within the context of the 17th century and was much influenced by his brother-in-law Nicolas Poussin. Dughet was immensely popular in his lifetime, painting large canvases and wall decorations as well as small landscapes.
