Lebohang Kganye

South African artist Lebohang Kganye examines Black struggles under apartheid rule through the particularities of her family history. The animated film “Ke Sale Teng” is related to the photographic series “Reconstruction of a Family” (two photographs from this series are also part of the Chazen’s collection). In the film and photographs, the artist poses as her grandfather, the first in her family to move to the city, providing a place of arrival for other family members in their migration trajectories. Kganye uses her body in staged theatrical performances with cardboard cutout sets as the center of her exploration into identities and tropes of South African urban identities. Kganye sets up a multi-layered dialogue between the historic and contemporary and between performance and documentary.
