Max Oppenheimer

This portrait of George Mosse, from around the time he was eight or nine, was commissioned by his father from the well-known artist Max Oppenheimer. The artist lived in Berlin from December 1925 until 1932, when he returned to his hometown of Vienna. Oppenheimer made portraits throughout his career, since such commissions were his best source of income, including in Berlin. Sitters there included a number of people in prestigious positions, including actress Maria Orska (1926), writer Thomas Mann (1926), Lord Mayor Gustav Böss (1926), doctor Kurt Friedman (1926), journalist Fred Hildenbrandt (1927), and actor Emil Jannings (1931).
