Max Oppenheimer

Four years after completing a portrait commission of young George Mosse (also in the collection of the Chazen Museum of Art), Oppenheimer again captured him in a profile sketch at thirteen years old. The same year this sketch was made, an exhibition of Oppenheimer’s graphic work was shown at the Galerie Bruno Cassirer. Perhaps George's father, Hans Lachmann-Mosse, commissioned the drawing after seeing Oppenheimer’s works on paper. Or perhaps the artist made the sketch ahead of a planned second portrait, but left Berlin for Vienna in 1932 before the commission was completed.
