Peripheral Painting II

Peripheral Painting II

Derrick Buisch

Derrick Buisch is an Associate Professor of Art at UW–Madison, teaching painting and drawing since 1997. For the Chazen’s 2020 Faculty Exhibition, he created five brightly colored and abstract works he called “Peripheral Paintings.” These site-specific paintings were installed in atypical locations throughout the museum. Rather than hanging prominently in a gallery, Buisch’s paintings engaged with the museum’s architecture by calling attention to oft-neglected spaces where artwork is not seen, providing exciting moments of discovery for the careful observer. Each painting was created to fit perfectly in each location, covering the wall edge to edge. We are proposing the purchase of “Peripheral Painting I,” a blue and orange painting that was designed for and installed at the top of one of the walls that surround the Elvehjem building’s third floor mezzanine. These works encourage visitors to consider how their surroundings impact their viewing experience.
