Adam Winner

To construct the series of paintings from which this work is drawn, Adam Winner applies paint to sheets of linen, covers them in white gesso using a palette knife, and layers then one atop another, building up the three-dimensional surface and allowing glimpses of bright primary colors to show through. In this way, he engages with the idea of imperfection: accidents and mistakes are exposed. This extends out to the edges of the pieces of linen, with their ragged, rough ends and fraying threads. The Josée Bienvenu Gallery stated in 2014 that “Winner's paintings of imperfect gestures are imbued with a feeling of permanent self-doubt.”
