Zoltán Bohus

“Sanctuary” is an optical sculpture with layers that seem to shutter upon approach. Zoltán Bohus achieved this effect by laminating layers of anodized plate glass into two large forms. He then ground the shapes to make sloping structures and polished the surfaces smooth. With this method, the sculpture’s verticals layers are only transparent from certain vantage points. From one angle the artwork is transparent, while from another, it appears densely opaque.
