Anthony Amoako-Attah

Anthony Amoako-Attah explores themes of migration, identity, and cultural heritage in glass. After studying Industrial Art at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana he pursued an MA and PhD in Glass Art at Sunderland University in the UK. He is particularly recognized for his innovative “glass screen printing” process which he uses to recreate the patterns and textures of Ghanaian Kente cloth on glass. “In Between” explores the symbolic weight of the ‘Ghana Must Go’ bag, an object deeply tied to themes of migration, displacement, and resilience. The name ‘Ghana Must Go’ recalls a crisis of the same name—the 1983 mass expulsion of Ghanaians from Nigeria. Approximately one million were forced to leave following the 1970s oil boom downturn and subsequent political instability that stimulated prejudice against foreign workers. Migrants relied on inexpensive, woven nylon bags to carry their belongings during their forced departures, henceforth known as ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags. More than just a bag, Amoako-Attah's “In Between” carries culture, memories, and profound resilience across borders.
