Keisai Eisen

The series Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido included the designs of two artists, Keisai Eisen who completed twenty-three designs, and Utagawa Hiroshige, as well as the work of two publishers, Kinjudo and Hoeido. In this design by Eisen that follows the mountainous inland highway and Kiso River, the snow-covered travelers approach the village of Itabana at sunset. The travelers bundled in capes and wide hats trudge along the winding path lined by stunted pines, which follows a rapid stream. Although many winter landscape scenes are void of vivid color, this design makes effective use of shades of pink, yellow, and green to create a sense of the setting sun.
