Kitagawa Utamaro

The Gifts of the Ebb Tide is an illustrated book of poems celebrating seashells. Collecting shells was a popular pastime in Japan. In these luxuriously produced prints, the use of embossment and crushed mother-of-pearl emulates textures and iridescence of real shells.
