Act III, Bannai attempts to arrest Kampei. After Hangan's attack on Moronao, Bannai, Moronao's retainer, is sent to arrest Kampei, Hangan's retainer (who has been dallying outside the palace with his beloved, Okaru) but Kampei overmasters him in combat On learning of his master's arrest for attacking Moronao, the distraught Kampei swears he will commit seppuku. Okaru, however, convinces him that they should escape to her father's home, where they are married. This sets the play onto a subplot which for several scenes follows the lives of Kampei and Okaru as they struggle to come to terms with Kampei's longing to avenge his master's death.
