Mario Avati

Instead of using a mezzotint rocker to achieve a solid black base, Avati makes a grid of deeply gouged scratches on the plate with a steel tool called a drypoint needle. He then scrapes and burnishes the scratched plate to create tones in his print. In lighter areas, the original drypoint grid is clearly visible.
