William Gilpin

The first to define the aesthetic theory called the Picturesque, William Gilpin emphasized composition and chiaroscuro effects in landscape rather than topographic exactitude. The precepts set out in his writings and applied in his drawings gained popularity among artists, amateurs, and gardeners in the creation of landscapes that were harmoniously composed and pleasing to the eye, but not lacking in dramatic effect.
