The Schoolboy (L'écolier)

The Schoolboy (L'écolier)

Albert Gleizes

Cubism is represented by a gouache from 1924, The Schoolboy (1997.31) by Albert Gleizes. Born in Paris in 1881, Albert Gleizes joined the cubist movement in 1909. By the 1920s Gleizes had developed a style with dynamic intersections of vertical, diagonal, horizontal, and circular movements. He claimed that a painting that concentrated on essential rhythms was universal and thus superior to a painting that retained reminders of subjective, individual perception.
