Samuel Hieronymous Grimm

Grimm, a Swiss watercolor artist who settled in England in 1768, became well known for satirical drawings, illustrations of Shakespeare, and for topographical views. The estate of Cornelius Heathcote Rodes, one of Grimm’s patrons and friends, is depicted here in his characteristic use of clean outline and subtle effects of light and shade.

1791, likely commissioned from S. H. Grimm (London, England) by Cornelius Heathcote Rodes (1754-1825) [also de Rodes or Rhodes] (Barlborough Hall, Derbyshire, England), since Rodes had commissioned a number of other similar views of his estate from Grimm. In 1844, the artwork likely then passed to William Hatfield Gossip (1824-1883), after 1844 known as William Hatfield de Rodes, who inherited from Cornelius Heathcote Rodes Barlborough Hall and associated property, which then passed to his daughter, Sophy Felicite de Rodes (1875-1935). Sophy Felicite de Rodes married Godfrey Locker Lampson in 1905. The artwork was recorded as being in the Locker Lampson family collection. 1991, sold by the Fine Art Society (London, England) to the Elvehjem Museum of Art [now called the Chazen Museum of Art].
