Hiroshige II, Utagawa and Utagawa Kunisada

The Hashiba Ferry, located on the outskirts of Edo on the Sumida River, was one of the crossings to the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. The direction of the ferry in the composition suggests it is arriving at the Hashiba landing from the Mukojima landing. The ferry carries two well-dressed passengers, one is seated and bundled in an outer kimono. The ferry operator wears a straw garment that repels the falling snow. The snow flakes produce a decorative effect on the dark evening sky and water. Like many collaborative prints, both artists’ signatures are prominently included in the work.
