Utagawa Hiroshige II

Hiroshige II was the favorite student and son-in-law of Hiroshige I and began using the artist’s name after his death in 1858. Hiroshige II used the name until 1865 when he divorced and moved from the family’s home. His work was stylistically very similar to his teacher and has often been misattributed due to his almost identical signature. His specialty was landscapes and pictures of famous places. This series was his most celebrated work. Snow at Kiso Gorge in Shinano Province pays homage to Hiroshige I’s vertical diptych masterpiece Untitled [Snowy Gorge at Fuji River] published in 1842. This single-sheet version achieves some of the drama of the earlier version with the contrasting white and blue palette and overall visual effect of the plunging depths of the gorge.
