Utagawa Hiroshige

One of Hiroshige’s forty-seven designs for the series Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido, Agematsu demonstrates the artist’s experiment with more abstract designs and liberal use of color. Two travelers pause on the bridge to view the dramatic waterfall and agitated water running beneath them. The peasant carrying a large load of firewood passes without notice. The jagged cliffs and rocky outcrops provide a graphic background that visually obscures where land ends and sky and water commence.
