Act IV, Waiting for the shogun to pass sentence on Hangan. In Hangan's castle, Lady Kaoyo and her ladies in waiting assemble a spectacular arrangement of cherry blossoms to divert Hangan from his troubles with Moronao. At the left two of Hangan's retainers approach. Rikiya, the son of Hangan's chief councillor, who has been tending to affairs in the country, has resolved to remain in attendance at the home of his master until his father returns. He is seated at the front left side of the porch, rounding out this poignant scene of domestic mourning over the fate of Hangan, Who faces a death sentence for attacking Moronao.
