George Wesley Bellows

George Bellows is best known for his representations of urban and sporting scenes. His bold and dynamic paintings captured the energy of New York City, depicting it as a place of constant movement and activity. Here we see a view of the Manhattan Bridge from Canal Street, where the artist’s studio was located. Even at night, there is action occurring in the streets. Streetlamps and lights from the buildings in the distance give the scene vibrancy.
