Rice was an extremely important crop, not only for feeding a growing population, but also for its byproducts. In this scene, laborers plant sprouted rice on a rainy day. They wear clothing made of rice straw, called wara, to protect them from wind and rain. The basket that sits in the foreground is also made of wara. Prior to planting, farmers germinated unhulled rice in barrels made of wara, which they placed in a pond while the grain sprouted. Women usually planted the rice, while men transported the baskets of seedlings to the fields.
