The Tōkaidō, or “eastern sea road,” was an important preindustrial roadway connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto in Japan. Fifty-three official stations along the Tōkaidō offered places to stop for a meal, shop for supplies, enjoy local entertainment, and find lodging. This scene of Fuchū was printed on a single sheet of paper that could be folded and bound into a small guidebook. The text in the print notes the distance to the next station in a traditional Japanese unit of measure called ‘ri.’ One ri is equivalent to about two and a half miles.
