John Hoppner

John Hoppner's charming portrait of Mary Tyrell represents the English tradition of portrait painting in the second half of the 18th century. The subject, Mary Tyrell, married Arthur Saunders, the 3rd Earl of Arran in 1789, around the date of this painting. The artist, a contemporary of Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds, was noted for the beautiful flesh tones he achieved.
