The scene on the box is based on a bylina (a traditional Russian heroic poem passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth) of the same name in which Ivanushka Godinovich finds a bride, a beautiful merchant’s daughter, Marya Dimitrovna, and takes her with him to Kiev. However, the end of the story—of which there are many versions—is unhappy. Marya is unfaithful and meets her death at the hand of Ivanushka.
