Utagawa Kunisada

Inscriptions in this print identify the kabuki characters depicted, but they do not name the actors or give the title of the associated play. Theatre enthusiasts at the time likely recognized well-known scenes and celebrity actors featured in the color woodcuts they purchased. Based on historical records, the actor carrying a trunk on his back in this print may be Nakamura Fukusuke I, who was performing the role of Sutewakamaru at the Ichimura theatre at the time this print was published.
