Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Featuring one hundred and eight heroic vagabonds, the Chinese novel Outlaws of the Marsh (Shuihuzhuan in Chinese, Suikoden in Japanese) provided the ideal content for serialized Japanese prints. The first Japanese translation of the novel appeared in the eighteenth century, igniting a fad for images of outlaws in the print market. This print, representing the character Yang Zhi (Seimenju Yoshi in Japanese), is from Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s serialization of the outlaws in the larger ôban-format. The series became an instant hit and brought fame to the artist.
