Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Act VI, Okaru holding a mirror. In this portrait of Okaru she seems to have the expression commented upon by her mother in the beginning of act six. After commenting on how splendid she looks she says: "You sound so cheerful, full of fun, but in your heart, I Know--" However, Okaru replies: "No, mother. I'm resigned to it. I've long since made up my mind to go into service at Gion [the teahouse] for my husband's sake."
