Utagawa Kuniyoshi

This triptych narrates an episode from the story of Minamoto no Akugenta Yoshihira, a warrior of the Minamoto clan who was beheaded at age twenty by the rival Taira clan. Here, Yoshihira’s ghost has returned to confront Kiyomori, the Taira clan’s leader, depicted in the left panel. Taking revenge, Yoshihira kills Kiyomori’s attendant, Naniwa Jirō, whose body is thrown into the air by a blast of fire and lighting bolts.
