Kawanabe Kyōsai

In this version of Shoki, or the Demon Slayer, Kyosai presents a simplified composition in a muted color palette that is drawn with thick, varying lines to give the printed work a painterly appearance. Kyosai’s distinctive style of printmaking stems from his years studying traditional Japanese painting at the Kano school.
