Mary Nimmo Moran

Mary Nimmo Moran studied drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her husband, landscape artist Thomas Moran, introduced her to the printmaking technique of etching, which became her preferred medium. Nimmo Moran worked from nature, sketching scenes directly onto prepared copper plates used in the etching process while sitting in front of her subject. She exhibited The Goose Pond in Boston in 1881 where it received critical acclaim. The work also earned her entry into London’s Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers as the first and only woman among its members at the time.
