As the Smithsonian's first choreographer-in-residence, Burgess is known for transforming galleries into stages, where movement breathes new life into visual art and history. This keynote will be enriched by live performances, including a kinesthetic response to exhibiting artist Toshiko Takaezu’s ceramics. Vitebsk, Russia, the early 20th century: Marc Chagall assembles a collective of remarkable artists in hopes of creating a school free for anyone who wishes to study. In the wake of the Bolshevik Revolution, however, that dream proves complex, as philosophies and personalities collide.
